Basic House Chores: Cleaning Floors

Cleaning floors can vary depending on the type of flooring you have (wood, tile, laminate, etc.), but here’s a general guide to help you tackle it:

1. Pick Up, then Sweep or Vacuum

  • Pick Up: Larger, thicker items, or sharp/metal objects that can either get stuck or damage any mop or vacuum you're planning to use later on. It will also make it easier to sweep hard floors before mopping. The broom will be able to cover/sweep more effectively, when it's just clearing out dust, as opposed to pushing some large, heavy, oddly-shaped items with it.

  • Sweep: If you have a hard surface floor (tile, wood, laminate), start by sweeping the floor to remove dust, dirt, and debris. It'll be easier for the mop to do clean up and will take longer for the mop to get filthy.

  • Vacuum: For carpets or rugs, vacuum thoroughly to pick up dirt and any larger particles

2. Choose the Right Cleaning Solution

  • For Tile/Hardwood/Laminate Floors:

    • Use a gentle floor cleaner specifically designed for your floor type.

    • You can also mix a mild solution of warm water with a few drops of dish soap or vinegar (for tile or laminate) for a budget-friendly option. Avoid vinegar on hardwood floors, as it can damage the finish.

  • For Carpet: Use a carpet cleaner or spot cleaner if needed. You can also use baking soda to freshen up the carpet before vacuuming.

  • For Wood Floors: Use a cleaner made specifically for wood to avoid damage, as harsh chemicals can strip the finish.

3. Mop or Wipe Down

  • For Hard Floors (tile, wood, laminate):

    • Mop: Dip a microfiber mop or soft mop into your cleaning solution, wring it out so it’s damp, not soaking, and mop the floor in sections. For tough stains, you can let the solution sit for a few minutes before wiping it off.

    • Dry: After mopping, you can follow up with a dry microfiber cloth or mop to ensure there’s no standing water (which could damage wood or laminate floors).

  • For Carpets:

    • If you don’t have a steam cleaner, spot clean stains using a carpet cleaner and a clean cloth, blotting the area (don’t rub, as this can spread the stain). For larger areas, you may want to rent a carpet shampooer or use a machine if you have one.

4. Dry the Floor

  • Wood or Laminate: Avoid leaving excess water on these surfaces, as it can cause swelling or warping. If you notice excess moisture, wipe it up with a dry cloth.

  • Tile: Tile floors can hold up to moisture better, but be sure to dry the floor with a clean towel if you notice excess water.

5. Final Touches

  • Once the floors are clean and dry, consider placing doormats at entryways to reduce the amount of dirt tracked in and protect your floor.

Additional Tips:

  • High-Traffic Areas: You may need to clean high-traffic areas more often to prevent dirt buildup.

  • Grout Lines (Tile): Use a toothbrush or grout brush with a cleaner or paste of baking soda and water to scrub the grout between tiles.

And that's it! We hope to see you again on the next post!
