Basic House Chores: Washing Dishes

While most people looking through these blog posts are probably adults who already clean their own homes, there are still people who are venturing out on their own for the first time. People who have probably been doing chores, to finish them the quickest way possible, but maybe not realizing that there was an order to these things. Or maybe, in this case, you had a dishwashing machine at your parent/s home, and now find yourself unsure how to proceed.
But once we start living alone, we need to learn HOW to do things, and WHY we should do it the right way.
The main reason why, is because, if dishwashing is not done right, it will:
1) entice pests to move in
2) make your utensils/dishes/pots and pans, and your general sink area smell bad
3) health risks
There is nothing more horrifying that having rats, cockroaches, and ants, walking everywhere because they can smell the food. And it's hard, getting sick (not to mention expensive), whether you're living alone or with someone.
A little cleanliness goes a very long way. And what better way to start than with doing the dishes properly?
Here's what we'll need to do:
Steps for Washing Dishes:
Scrape off food: Before you start, scrape leftover food from the plates into the trash or compost bin.
For oil used in frying, you can probably use it somewhere between 1-3 times. The more oil gets reused, the more unhealthy it becomes. You can store your used oil in an empty milk carton when it's ready for disposal. Used oil can either be recycled, or brought to specific garbage disposal centers, if you don't want to toss it in with the rest of the other trash.
DO NOT pour it down the sink. Whether it's leftover food or oil, It'll cause clogging in the long run. Just don't do it.
Fill the sink with hot water: Use warm or hot water to help loosen grease and grime. You can let it soak for a few minutes before getting started, especially if you have difficult bits still stuck. Add a few squirts of dish soap into the water for cleaning power.
Wash dishes in order:
Start with cleaner items like glasses and cups. This keeps the water from getting dirty too quickly.
Next, wash plates and bowls.
Finish with pots, pans, and utensils, which tend to be the dirtiest.
Scrub thoroughly: Use the sponge or brush to scrub each dish. For sticky food, let the dish soak for a minute in the hot water to loosen the residue.
Make sure that when scrubbing pots and pans, the scrub used isn't going to harm the coating. Unless you have cast-iron cookware, chances are, your pots and pans will have coating that will get damaged with a steel brush/scrub. If food is stubbornly stuck to it, you can try putting in some water, boiling it, and using a wooden spatula to scrape it off. There are also scrubs that are coating-friendly. But the steel one is a definite NO, unless your pots and pans are stainless steel.
Rinse with clean water: After each dish is scrubbed, rinse it thoroughly with hot water to remove soap.
Dry or air-dry: If you have a drying rack, place the dishes there to air-dry. If you’re in a hurry, dry the dishes with a clean towel.
Clean the sink: After the dishes are done, give your sink a quick rinse to remove leftover food particles and soap.
Tips:
Organize as you go: Stack dishes neatly and wash items in the most logical order to avoid redoing steps.
DO NOT use a rinse station: You might not want to keep rinsing under running water, but if you fill a second sink or basin with clean water to rinse dishes, and put the soapy dishes in there, it won't rinse properly, as the soap on your everything will end up in your rinse water.
